Second row finished

One at a time I added the remaining planks of the second row.

The bow-panels were the most difficult. Quite a lot of torsion.

But with the help of some (many) clamps I got there

Looks nice!

Now I have to trim all edges and prepare for the bottom panels.

Second row

The first row of panels is finished, so let’s start with the second row.

Dry-fitting the next panel. Making sure all the angles on the frames and battens are correct.

The panels fit perfectly, you couldn’t put a knife between them.

That’s it, another piece of skin on the boat.
I will trim the edges when all the panels are mounted.

The next one is more difficult. I had to apply some force to twist it to the correct shape.

But nice result again. Lost some time admiring the shape…

Another Plank

This is how I put the planks on the frames.

First I put two layers of epoxy on the inside, everywhere except where it will be glued to the frames and stringers. The connection to the frames will be stronger if the wood is still untreated before gluing.
When the planks are mounted, all surfaces inside the boat will be perfectly sealed and only need one final layer of paint.

With the help of my friends I then glue the plank to the frames. You can’t have too many clamps when you’re building a boat…

The next day I can remove all the clamps.

That’s how it looks on the inside. The planks are connected by strips of plywood.
Before I give it the final layer of paint I will add fillets where necessary.

Finally some skin on the frames!

Big day in the boatyard! Finally I’m putting the first panels on the frames. Now it really starts looking like a boat.

Almost done with the stringers

All the stringers and battens on the frames!
I’m not quite finished with shaping the frames and the battens to the right angles.

Nearing the end of stage 2

Almost done with the stringers. I’m now fitting the last chine battens.

I also started shaping the chine battens, so I can start with the planking.

There’s a lot of planing involved. I like working with the plane. It’s very rewarding, you make good progress and you can feel the shape you are giving.

Gluing the stringers

I really like my elastic ropes. You can easily adjust them to hold anything in place but with enough flexibility to move things around. It’s a bit like having five hands.

This stringer is more difficult to glue to the frames than the other one, because there’s quite a bit of torsion in it. I used some battens and elastic ropes to help with the twist. The blue tape on the battens does not stick to epoxy so I can remove them after the epoxy has cured.

Fitting the stringers

I started to put in the stringers. Just a two small battens, but a huge difference to the eye! The boat now gets curves.

The notches in frames need to be adjusted to the angle of the stringers. I fixed the stringers with elastic rope so I can easily move them in and out of the notches until they fit correctly.

Proceed to next stage

Last week I reached an important milestone: I finished stage 1 (the frames) and started with stage 2 (the stringers)!

After finishing all the frames I aligned them accurately and fixed them to the assembly jig.

I used a laser to position the frames correctly. Every frame is now screwed to the jig, so nothing will move as I continue building.

I started preparing the stringers. As everything else they get double coat of epoxy before I use them.

Stem

Fitting stem and knee. Now the front most part is in place the final size and shape of the boat get clear.

Next: Aligning everything acurately with help of a laser.
